The Last Stage – Louise Voss

From the author of the bestselling psychological thriller The Old You

At the peak of her career as lead singer of a legendary 1980s
indie band, Meredith Vincent was driven off the international
stage by a horrific incident. Now she lives incognito in a cottage
on the grounds of Minstead House, an old stately home, whilst
working in the gift shop. Her past is behind her and she enjoys
her new life.

But a series of inexplicable and unsettling incidents have started
to happen around her – broken china, vandalised gardens… And
when a body is found in the gardens of Minstead House, Meredith
realises that someone is watching, someone who knows who she
is and who wants to destroy her…

A dark, riveting and chilling psychological thriller, The Final
Stage is a study of secrets and obsessions, where innocent acts
can have the most terrifying consequences.

My Review:

Meredith – once the famous Merry Heather, lead singer with the band of the moment, Cohen – a band which she left suddenly without a singer after a traumatic incident – sent into turmoil when she gets call from the past, Iain – her old manager has tracked her down – because for the past twenty years she’s been hiding, from him, them, her past and secrets that are best left unsaid.

She’s living a secluded life in, working as the Manager in the gift shop of Minstead House, visited by tourists and home to a jumble of characters – one of whom goes missing and odd situations arise.

I loved Meredith’s character, the way the books weaves between a young Meredith on the brink of adolescence and her now adult sedate and secretive life. The way the story unfolds into a deep and compelling read that held twists and turns a plenty and kept me up late reading. Louise Voss triumphs again and long may she reign.
